Film editing is the pacing and structure of film.

Intercutting sound and picture, film editors build the action and pacing of a movie.

If you like fast action films, then you would like the editing of “Taken” or “Star Wars”.

If you enjoy more unique editing, you may study the Stanley Kubrick films: “2001” or “Clockwork Orange”.

To me the most unique use of editing in a movie would be sequences from “Apocalypse Now” and

“Clockwork Orange”.

There are sequences in theses two films which are almost surreal, taking the narrative story to a level outside of normal fiction.

For example, in “Clockwork Orange” the main character “Alex” a british thug gang leader, accidentally kills an elderly woman but instead of showing blunt violence of the act, they cut to images of artwork and then back to the scene after she is dead.

This is unusual in most Hollywood movies.

Stanley Kubrick, the director, is known for his unique editing style.

In “2001” he takes the audience from the stone age to the space age using one simple jump cut.

In one scene, an Ape throws a bone in the air, by the time it is heads back down to earth, it turns into a space ship. With this one cut they delete thousands of years of history in a split second.
