Mid-term paper outline with annotated bibliography
Outline (10 points)
Compose your FIRST PARAGRAPH as an iBased on class readings and discussions, write up a short outline of the final paper (2

paragraphs, 300 words each) on an issue that you found to be especially important, intriguing,

and/or of interest to you.ntroduction to your larger paper. Your
introduction should have 3 basic components:
1. Hook
sentence: grab
your readers
attention!!
2. The Issue: A brief introduction to what is
being argued in the sources you have chosen.
3. Thesis Statement: The starting point for your analysis of the
issue. The thesis statement should be CLEAR, CONCISE AND
CONTROVERSIAL!
HOOK SENTENCE
Too broad: Throughout time issues have been shaped by people in power
attempting to maintain the status quote; today the media has
become their most powerful tool.
Better, but still too
broad:
The media helps American elites to set the agenda on a variety
of issues. (Answers the question, what does media do?)
Narrowed topic: The media is a powerful agenda setting tool that has helped to
transform black ‘slaves’ into black ‘criminals’ by overrepresenting
their involvement in criminal or deviant behaviour.
(Answers the question, how has media contributed to the overrepresentation
of black Americans as criminals.)
THESIS STATEMENT
Compose your thesis statement carefully, for it is the key to a good paper. As a matter of
fact, a good thesis statement can outline your paper for you.
In this paper, I will write about the problem of race
and social deviance.
OK, but so what? This doesn’t tell
me what you will argue based on
your careful analysis of the research
that you have collected.
In the SECOND PARAGRAPH, clearly and concisely explain why the particular issue you
have chosen is important, intriguing and/or interesting. You should use the research that
you have collected to give a brief overview of the topic that you have chosen. General
paragraph formation rules apply. USE CITATION!!!
American elites construct black people as criminals
so that they can maintain the status quo and this
has led to many black people being put in jail and
also had great impacts on their ability to lead full
and productive lives in America society; American
media is racist.
Concise? Try to keep your thesis
statements as short and to the point
as possible. Further, make sure that
you don’t make statements that will
be very difficult to support. For
example, getting at the intentions
of American elites in such a general
manner would require God like
knowledge of their intention and
the assumption that their will is all
powerful.
The media has played a key role in the
criminalization of black people in American media.
This is a good ‘draft thesis’ because
it is clear, concise and controversial
enough to warrant argumentation.

In A Vindication of the Rights of Woman, it is suggested that hereditary rulers can hardly be expected to lead
governed by the principles of reason due to their lack of experience (Wollstonecraft, 1996, p. 10). [NOTICE THE
PLACE OF THE PERIOD]
Wollstonecraft was a key figure in early feminist thought (Reuter, Halldenius, & Coffee, 2014, p. 906).
Paraphrase:
Reuter, Halldenius, and Coffee (2014) argue that Wollstonecraft is a key figure in feminist thought (p. 906).
Direct Quote:
Reuter, Halldenius, and Coffee (2014) argue that Wollstonecraft is the “writer of a pioneering feminist
work” (p. 906).

Annotated Bibliography
Step 1:
Cite your source with APA Style.
Wollstonecraft, M. (1996). A Vindication of the Rights of Woman (2nd Revised ed. edition).
Mineola, N.Y: Dover Publications.
Step 2:
Summarize the source. Write 2-4 sentences that will summarize your source in a
concise manner, include essential concepts that are relevant to the research topic.
Wollstonecraft’s book explores the issue of women’s rights through a critique of Enlightenment
philosophy, which tends to focus on a particular form of Reason based on the assumption of an
autonomous individual. In this book she suggests that Experience is key in the development of
Reason. She critiques forms of authority that are based on inherited qualities and suggests that in
order for an individual to gain reason they must ‘suffer’ or experience difficulties in life.
Step 3:
In 1-2 sentence discuss how the source will be used in your research paper. This
should outline the content of the source that will be used in the paper. If you
already have a potential thesis statement, discuss how you will use the article to
support this thesis statement.
This book will be key to building my critique of forms of authority that are based on blind
obedience. I will argue that Wollstonecraft’s arguments about unjust power can still be helpful to
our understandings of authority.
