Reflection papers: Over the course of the semester you will be responsible for completing several reflection papers. Each reflection paper should be minimum 750 words typed, doubled-spaced and 12 point font in Times New Roman. More details and topics will be provided in class. The papers will be graded primarily on content and how much effort you put into demonstrating your awareness of course content in relation to the specific assignment and your personal experience. If I cannot understand what you are trying to say, I will not be able to grade your paper. Therefore, be aware of sentence structure, grammar, and your ability to support your argument as these will also be taken into account during the grading process. Late reflection papers may not be accepted (See “make-up” section).
Reflection Paper #1- The Insanity of “Reefer Madness” You are to watch the film “Reefer Madness” and write a three page summary analyzing the concepts discussed in class while answering the questions below.
How accurate do you believe this film is in its depiction of marijuana use? In what ways have American perceptions of substance use changed since this film was made? In what ways have perceptions stayed the same?
What do you believe was the message of the film? Do you agree or disagree with that message? Also, what were the most meaningful moments for you in determining whether you accept or reject the film’s message?
What characters in the film would you say have an addiction? Cite evidence from the film and outside sources (the textbook, the DSM, Journal Articles) to make your argument. If you believe no one in the film meets criteria then please make a case for what requirements they are missing.
You do not have to provide an overall synopsis of the film (I’ve seen it), simply point out certain scenes or characters as they are relevant to answering the questions. This means don’t start your paper telling me the plot of the movie. You only have 3 pages to answer three questions, no need to add in fluff. I want to hear your thoughts, I want you to reflect on all that you’ve learned and show me what you really think.
