Online Power Point Presentations may present some unique challenges because you need to
convey the information electronically, while keeping the slide manageable and streamlined (i.e.
uncluttered) but also ensuring that all information you would otherwise share in a classroom or
live presentation is somehow provided to your online audience. The following suggestions
should be helpful in meeting these goals:
1. Always have a cover page that identifies the topic and your name. This serves as your
introduction.
2. The second slide should be an overview of the topic or an agenda/outline – this enables
the participant to understand where you intend to go with the presentation and what
areas you will cover.
3. Keep slides uncluttered – use bullets, not sentences
– do not use “wall-to-wall” text, rather, space things out and avoid tight text. A
slide should not be jammed with information.
– Don’t make text too small to read
– Think about color and how things will be impacted by its use or absence. Can
you audience see the text and material clearly?
2. Utilize the notes feature on the ppp program to add what you would otherwise say during
a live presentation. This helps to effectively streamline your slides, but also get the
“meat” of the presentation across to the electronic audience! This is mandatory in all
online PPP in this class!
3. Make conclusions, recommendations or predictions at the end to wrap up what you have
presented.
4. Include a slide that asks the audience for “Questions” at the end.
5. Be sure to properly credit sources, including source information for data imported into
the document.
6. Finally, be mindful of the “presentation” of the document.
– Can it be read easily? The use of a font color that is difficult to see or read (esp
when coupled with some background colors).
– Illustrations can be useful and can add a new dimension to the paper if used
judiciously. Having graphics or pictures that help illustrate your points made can
be a powerful visual. At the same time, overuse can become overwhelming to the
person viewing the slides.
