Please provide your observations of communal apartments in St.Petersburg. How should it feel like to live in this kind of environment? How public and private space interplay in the lives of the communal apartment inhabitants?
How does the construction of the elite housing both reflect and form the values of the Russian rich?
City of Utopias and Slums
Virtual communal apartment in St.Petersburg.
The project was started by a good friend of mine, Russian anthropologist Ilya Outekhine, who also authored a book on communal apartments. One of the apartments presented in the project is the one where Ilya used to live for many years (and I have visited him there many times). Now Ilya and his family own a nice spacious three bedroom apartment in one of the central districts of the city.
