For credit, write a Short Analysis (~400-500 words) on Do the Right Thing and Central Park Five using the short essay prompt below. Remember to support all of your claims with evidence/examples from the films.
Short Analysis Prompt: frame your analysis around some of the critical questions raised below:
What do Do the Right Thing (Lee, 1989) and The Central Park Five (Burns, 2012) have in common? How do the films complement one another? Utilizing different stylistic choices, how do both of the films interrogate racism? Does one film’s use of style seem to be more effective or thought-provoking? Which other themes or social phenomena do both films have in common? For instance, how do both movies question social institutions and politics? How does the phrase “fight the power” function in both movies? What about media’s role in helping or hindering race relations? The Central Park Five examines how the media and popular culture play a role in perpetuating a false narrative to the public, is there also evidence of this in Do the Right Thing? Citing examples from both films, how are these industries complicit in propagating myths and falsehoods?
