You will be required to create one entry within the Unit 2 Journal per chapter (be sure to label the entry with either the chapter number or assignment name). Each entry will require you to discuss/explain two major topics from the chapter. Each topic is worth 1 point towards the corresponding unit exam if completed correctly (partial credit will be given if answer are not perfect but close).
The list of topics to include are below or I’ve attached a word document (see above, ‘Attached Files’) if you would like to download a copy.
You can complete each chapter entry one at a time as you are completing the chapter assignments or wait until you are studying for the exam to complete all five entries at once. It is up to you. But to receive ANY extra credit the journal entries must be submitted by October 3rd at 11:59pm (BEFORE exam 2). Because this is extra credit you will not see a grade in the gradebook.
From Chapter 6:
Write a journal entry about Ossification. Include in your entry the following two topics:
1.Explain the process of Endochondral Ossification. Be sure to include the key terms: cartilage skeleton, bone collar, primary ossification center, medullary cavity, and secondary ossification center. Which bones of the body would be formed through Endochondral ossification?
2.Describe how Membranous Ossification differs from endochondral ossification. Which bones of the body would be formed through Membranous ossification?
From Chapter 7:
Write a journal entry about the Muscle Contraction. Include in your entry the following two topics:
1.Explain the how a muscle fiber is stimulated through Excitation-Contraction coupling.
2.After a muscle fiber is stimulated, explain how the Calcium released from the sarcoplasmic reticulum causes muscle contraction (explain the Sliding Filament Theory). Be sure to include in your answer the key terms: calcium, actin, myosin binding sites, myosin, cross-bridges, ATP, ADP, powerstroke, and re-cocking
From Chapter 8:
Write a journal entry about Action Potential. Include in your entry the following two topics:
1.Explain how an action potential is passed from the pre-synaptic neuron to the post-synaptic neuron. Include in your answer the neurotransmitter used, the ion channels that open, the direct of ion movement, and how it causes the action potential.
2.Explain how an action potential is propagated (moved) down the axon of a neuron. Be sure to describe how it differs between unmyelinated and myelinated axons.
From Chapter 9:
Write a journal entry about Eyes and Ears. Include in your entry the following two topics:
1.Describe the structure of the eye. Include structures for all three layers and how cones and rods differ in function.
2.Describe the structure of the ear. Include structures for all three regions and how a sound wave passes from the auricle to the hair cells.
