Continuation of the Attatched Paper
(2-3 pages, double-spaced, size 12 font)
(Note that details for each subheading below, will be circulated.)
The following is a format of what shall be stated in each section
This experimental study will investigate the relative effectiveness of cognitive behavioral therapy and psychoanalysis in treating depression among adults with substance use disorders.
Design: This experimental study will investigate the relative effectivess of MBCT and psychoanalysis in treating depression among ………….
Specifically between groups experimental design will be used. The ecperimental group will receive MBCBT (Mindfulness-Based Congnitive Behavioral Therapy) where as the control group will receive psychoanalysis.
All subjects will be screened and assesssed for mild to moderate depression based on the criteria set forth in standard classification such as the DSM-5 and ICD-10
Inclusion Criteria: In this section one must clearly state all the characetristics or factors that the subjects must fulfill or possess in order to quality to partcipate in the study. In other words one is defining the study population. Additionally, the charcetristics or criteria genrally relates to socio demographics which are potential confounding factors.
Example: All subjects in this study must possess a diadnosis of mild or moderate depression. Additionally, they must meet the following criteria, which serve to define the study population.
~ Between the ages of …..
Recruitment and Sampling: A convience (volunteer) sample of about 100 subjects (50 in each group expereimental and control). Will be submitted for this study
Next you must list and explain a few strategies that are considered effective in your research context for recruitting subjects.
Note you must state in your proposal in thi ssection that all recruitment material must first be opposed by ITB before they are implemented or circulated.
The following strategies or approaches will be used for recruitting subjects for this study……
Intervention (Treatment): In this section you must clearly described each treatment from an evidence based perspective. In other words provide references primarily in the past five years.
The two treatments that will be used in this study are as follows ………………
Also, for each intervention, in addition to the introductory information (historical perspective, effectiveness, mechanism of action, controversies and adverse effects), you must also address the following. Note that separate subheadings are not required.
1. The setting – where will the study take place (including administering the treatment), and why? Are there any concerns about potential confounding, regarding the setting?
2. Personnel – Who will administer the treatments (such as licensed mental health practitioners), and will they be given training about the study protocol to facilitate a standardized process?
3. For what duration will the treatment be given, and what will be the procedure?
4. Specify the primary outcome measure, that is, the dependent variable (such as depression score, self-esteem, etc.), and indicate how often measurements will be taken.
Instrumentation: The next subheading will be “Instrumentation”, and will include the following.
Begin by stating that a questionnaire will be developed to ascertain personal and sociodemographic data. It will also incorporate the Rosenberg self-esteem scale. Note that you will state your specific scale, based on what you are trying to change.
Next you must address the psychometric properties of the scale, that is, its reliability and validity. A quick Google search using the terms – reliability, validity, and the name of the scale (for example, Rosenberg self-esteem scale), will get you this information.
Please properly paraphrase and reference the information. For reliability, in particular, you must indicate the Cronbach’s alpha, a value between 0 and 1, which is a measure of internal consistency. It is often reported as a value between .7 and 1, indicating that the items in the scale are meaningfully related.
The validity of the scale refers the extent to which the scale is measuring what it is intended to measure. Researchers typically use a criterion validity approach, that is, they correlate the scale with a measure of behavior or performance, with which the scale is theoretically related. For example, some researchers have correlated self-esteem score with academic performance, and report the correlation coefficient.
You simply have to note what researchers have done to validate the scale that you propose to use, and report that information in your proposal (in this section), properly paraphrased and referenced.
Strengths, Limitations, and Potential Implications:
List of Appendices
Appendices are supplementary material (usually excerpted from publications), which can better clarify and explain your study. For example, the instrument or scale that will be used for measuring or determining depression score will be included here.
