Research Paper (50 Points)
PSY 111 – General Psychology

This assignment is designed so that you will gain considerable knowledge of one specific area of psychology that is of interest to you. You may choose from the list of topics that will be provided or consult with the professor about an idea you have (please see list below). Once you choose a topic, your task will be to review the literature on your topic and organize what you learned into a research paper.

You should use a minimum of 7 peer-reviewed sources including journal articles or book chapters from founding researchers on that topic. YOU ARE NOT PERMITTED TO CITE WEBSITES, YOUR TEXTBOOK, OR PAPERS OFF A WEBSITE. For each of the sources you read you will need to complete an Article Evaluation Form (see Appendix of this syllabus). This will help you in thoroughly examining the literature and drawing connections among the articles and book chapters you have read throughout the course. You will turn in your Article Evaluation Forms with your research paper by including them in your Appendix section.

Your research paper must be written in APA Style Manual (6th Edition) format, including title page, page numbers, double-spaced, single-sided, headers, section headings, in-text references, reference page, and appendix. The paper will be a maximum 10-12 pages (not including title page, references, or appendix). This paper is due Thursday, December 10, 2015 (THIS IS A REVISED DATE IN THE SCHEDULE).

Generally, your paper will include:

a) Has a cover/title page in APA 6th Edition format
b) Introduction – Has an Introduction section that introduces your topic and your thesis statement – which is the point that you plan to make in the paper. (approximately 1 –
2 paragraphs)
c) Research – Describe the topic(s) and its importance to understanding human psychology; problems addressed by the literature on your topic; gaps in the literature on your topic; theoretical approaches to examining your topic as it relates to the specific population of people you may be examining, summary of results of research findings, meaning or implications from research on your topic, application of knowledge learned from articles and social benefit of the information learned about your topic. (approximately 5-7 pages)
d) Reflection – Discuss your reactions to what you learned from the literature on your topic. Consider how much literature exists on your topic, how recent the literature is, how critically has the topic been examined and from what points of view, what is your personal experience or interest in the topic, how does the topic relate to you or people that you know, what was surprising about what you found out, what other inquiries do you have about your topic, how will you use the information you learned in your research? (approximately 2-3 pages)
e) Conclusion – Summarize the findings of your research and clearly state the connections made to the topic’s importance to understanding psychology
(approximately 1-2 paragraphs)
f) References – References that are in APA 6th edition format
g) Appendix – Here you will place your Article Evaluation Forms
