The calculation of a geometric (i.e. multiplicative) mean of income, education and life expectancy components in the UNDP’s Human Development Index (HDI) provides a more appropriate indication of ‘development’ than the arithmetic (i.e. additive) combinations of components in the Genuine Savings (or ‘Adjusted Net Savings Rate’) and ISEW indicators …… or is this difference of minor importance relative to the omission of other features which should have been … View More Task: The calculation of a geometric (i.e. multiplicative) mean of income, education and life expectancy components in the UNDP’s Human Development Index (HDI) provides a more appropriate indication of ‘development’ than the arithmetic (i.e. additive) combinations of components in the Genuine Savings (or ‘Adjusted Net Savings Rate’) and ISEW indicators …… or is this difference of minor importance relative to the omission of other features which should have been included in an indicator of sustainable development? Please look at Hess’s example calculation for HDI on p324-327 in Hess (2013) (click here to download) [big file, so please be patient with the download] to see how a ‘geometric mean’ is calculated. Then check out how HDI varies across countries by following this link. The ‘World Map’ link in the left hand menu on this webpage displays HDI per country, as well as data for other indicators developed by the UNDP e.g. Inequality-adjusted HDI, gender ratio of HDI, multi-dimensional poverty index. To check out the arithmetic calculations which generate the Genuine Savings indicator (or ‘Adjusted Net Savings Rate’), look at Hess’s explanation on p321-324 in Hess (2013) (downloaded from the link in the previous paragraph). To can check the arithmetic calculations for ISEW, see Table 1 on p66 of the paper by Gigliarano et al (2014) (click here to download). Read Less
