Q5:: A client tells you that they wish to avoid all forms of alcohol. Describe the chemical structure of an alcohol and its properties. What is another (chemical) name for the type of alcohol that your client wishes to avoid, and what is an example of an alcohol in the diet that might be good for you?

Ethyl Alcohol or rather ethanol is one of the alcohols, which is used in the production of alcoholic drinks. Other types of alcohols include methanol, butanol, propanol and many others, which are named according to the number of carbons in the chain. The intoxicating agent, ethanol, is found in alcoholic beverages such as wine, beer, vodka, and spirits. Other types of alcohols when consumed cause devastating damages to the body since they are toxic. The client would like to quit drinking ethanol. Just like other alcohols, ethanol has high solubility in water. It is highly volatile hence flammable. It has a molecular mass of 46.07 g/mol while at the same time a boiling point of 78.37 degrees Celsius. When burned, ethanol produces carbon dioxide and water as the products. When a person consumes alcohol, it is distributed in body water after absorption from the intestines. The chemical structure of ethanol is (C2H5OH), which means that the number of carbons is two while the hydrogens are five.

Avoidance of drinking ethanol or rather alcoholic beverages is an initiative that can be taken by any individual who has high dependence. One of the effects of ethanol in the body is elevating the neurotransmitter called GABA (gamma amino butyric acid) which interferes with the signaling pathway. Due to the action on the central nervous system, ethanol is classified as a depressant that ends up lowering both physical and cognitive properties. The client would love to quit drinking of alcohol, which can be found in beverages such as wine and beer. The path to alcohol free life depends on avoiding the triggering factors. Although the journey is compounded by several challenges, it requires strong social support especially when the client has heavy dependence.
